Research & Planning: Directors

After analysing many music videos, I have also been looking at directors and producers of music videos and looking at their conventions of how they make their music videos. I have always been a fan of the director called Director X as his music videos are unique to his name as well as narratives being unique and stylistic videos. It also said this on the internet from Wikipedia.
"His trademark is tweaking the letterbox format; instead of just using black bars on the top and bottom of the frame to frame the image, many videos by X actually feature the bars opening vertically to reveal the video and closing vertically at the end, like a letter box."
I realised this after reading this and looking at the videos again.
Here are some examples of Director X's most well known music videos:

Nicki Minaj - Your Love (2010)

Justin Bieber - Boyfriend (2012)

Drake - HYFR (2012)

As you can see from these music videos, what was said on Wikipedia was correct therefore this shows Director X's uniqueness. Also by looking at the narratives of the videos, these videos stand out from many others, especially the music video for Nicki Minaj - Your Love as it is based on martial arts with the stylistic modern idea of the green curtains in the back with the blue representing the river water underneath the bridge. In comparison to Drake - HYFR, the idea of Drake's bar-mitzvah making it different from many other music videos.

Another director I am a fan of is Benny Boom, similarly to Director X, Benny Boom creates modern music videos that are unique to his name.

Nicki Minaj - Pound the Alarm (2012)

Keyshia Cole - Long Way Down (2010)

Trey Songz - Heart Attack (2012)

As you can see from these Benny Boom videos, they all have similarities in the sense that they all have a narrative and even by looking at the colours and enhancement of colours shows Benny Boom's style. The editing in all the videos are similar, they all follow the beat of the music especially the Trey Songz - Heart Attack music video, which also includes reverses and slow motions. Recently, Benny Boom at the beginning of his music videos start with 'Benny Boom presents' looking like a short movie and showing his style of music videos. Benny Boom tends to use a lot of bright lights in the mise-en-scene's such as street lights and natural lighting and then enhancing these colours to make them stand out more.
